The Catalyst Centre Popular Education link “database” of Canadian and international groups practicing popular education hopes to connect organizations and individuals, creating a network in which to share resources, ideas and inspiration.

Popular education is a growing and continually changing field of practices and theories. We use “Popular Education” as an umbrella term that encompasses the many traditions and practices of social justice education. The groups we have included in the database reflect the diversity of popular education. Some of these organizations deal explicitly with popular education, including popular theater and critical pedagogy. Other groups do not necessarily use the term “popular education” to describe their work, but we have included them because we feel that their approach, methods or resources coincide with the principles of popular education. We have also included other progressive organizations dealing with issues relevant to popular education and whose mandate resonates with our own.

We have organized our links into sixteen categories. By categorizing groups in this way, it is not our intention to pigeon-hole organizations into narrow categories or ignore the interconnectedness of the issues involved; we simply want to make it as easy as possible for people to find what they are looking for. Any directory, including this database, has its biases and limitations. While we have included some organizations based in other parts of the world (especially in the Popular Education category), there is a stronger focus on Canada. In some categories, the focus is specifically on Toronto-based groups. If you have any questions or comments about the database, don’t hesitate to contact us.
